Curious about HTMA?
Everything you might want to know about the process, what to expect, and whether it’s right for you.
-
HTMA can be a beautiful tool across many stages of life—from children to adults + older adults. Because it requires only a small hair sample, it’s a simple and non-invasive way to gather information without a blood draw.
Your mineral patterns can offer insight into areas like metabolism, stress response and nutritional imbalances and help us create a more individualized approach to nourishment.
Protocols are never one-size-fits-all. Supplement amounts, food recommendations + lifestyle support are tailored to the individual, with additional considerations for children, pregnancy, postpartum and older adults.
-
Think of HTMA as a snapshot of your mineral landscape over time.
Minerals are foundational to so many processes in the body—from energy production and metabolism to nervous system function, stress response, blood sugar regulation, thyroid function, hormones and more. Because we're looking at such a foundational piece of our physiology, HTMA can offer insight into many different aspects of health and help us see patterns that may be contributing to how you're feeling.
Rather than looking at a single mineral in isolation, I look at your overall pattern—mineral levels and ratios, oxidation rate, stress patterns, possible toxic-metal patterns + how all of this relates to your symptoms, nourishment, lifestyle and health history.
The goal isn't to diagnose disease, but to better understand your body's inner terrain and identify where it may be asking for more support.
-
Blood work is incredibly valuable, particularly when we need to understand what is happening in the body right now. HTMA offers a different lens—looking at mineral patterns incorporated into the hair as it grows, which can give us a broader, longer-term picture rather than a single snapshot in time.
Your blood is tightly regulated because your body works hard to maintain blood chemistry within certain ranges. Hair gives us different information altogether, allowing us to look at mineral levels and relationships, metabolic patterns and trends that may not be reflected in the same way through blood.
And practically, HTMA is wonderfully simple: no needles, no blood draw—just a small hair sample.
-
Once you purchase your HTMA, I'll send you everything you need to get started, including simple at-home hair sampling instructions, a health and lifestyle questionnaire, and everything you need to mail your sample to the lab.
Once your results are in, I’ll interpret your mineral chart alongside your symptoms, health history, nourishment and lifestyle.
We'll then meet for a 75-minute 1:1 Zoom session to walk through your results, the patterns I’m seeing and your questions. You'll also receive a personalized mineral, nourishment and lifestyle protocol with clear next steps.
-
Once you mail your hair sample, plan for approximately 2 weeks before your interpretation session. This gives the lab time to process your sample and send me your results, and gives me time to thoroughly review them and prepare your personalized protocol.
-
If you're actively following a mineral-balancing program, retesting is an important part of the process.
The whole point of your protocol is for your body chemistry to change—and as you change, your protocol needs to change with you.
Your oxidation pattern can shift, mineral ratios can change and previously hidden patterns can become more apparent. Rather than staying indefinitely on the supplements recommended from your first test, we periodically retest so your nutrition and supplementation continue to reflect where your body is now.
HTMA isn't meant to be static. It's meant to change with you.
-
Typically, you'll follow your initial protocol for 3–4 months before retesting. Your retest shows us what has shifted and what your body needs next, allowing us to adjust your protocol as you progress.
Mineral balancing is a process—not a quick fix—and each test gives us another piece of the story.
-
Your protocol is completely personalized to your HTMA results, symptoms, health history and lifestyle.
Targeted supplementation is an important piece, with recommendations specific to your mineral patterns and oxidation rate. When appropriate, I often use Endo-Met formulations developed specifically for Mineral-Nutritional Balancing.
We’ll also look at food and nourishment, including the foods that best support your unique metabolic needs, along with lifestyle and nervous system support.
Depending on what your body is showing us, your protocol may also include practices such as infrared sauna, dry brushing, lymphatic support, castor oil packs, meditation, breathwork and other supportive practices.
The goal is a clear, realistic roadmap for supporting your body as a whole—not just a list of supplements.
-
Targeted supplementation is typically an important part of Mineral-Nutritional Balancing, but supplements are only one piece of the picture.
Food and nourishment are always foundational to my work. At the same time, we have to consider the changing mineral quality of our soils and modern food system. And sometimes, getting the targeted amount of a mineral your body needs through food alone would require eating an unrealistic amount—putting more stress on digestion and the body.
Many of us are also coming into this work already depleted, and sometimes food alone simply isn't enough to rebuild those reserves efficiently. Targeted supplementation can help provide more direct support as we work to bring the body back toward a healthier baseline.
My approach blends targeted mineral supplementation + whole-food nourishment. With my background in herbalism, I also love incorporating herbs and whole-food sources of nutrients when appropriate.
The goal isn't a cabinet full of supplements forever. It's to use them strategically while continuing to build a deeply nourishing foundation through real food.
Supplements support the foundation—they don't replace it.
-
Not necessarily. In fact, I love HTMA as a foundational place to begin because it gives us more information before simply adding another supplement, restrictive diet, detox or wellness protocol.
If you're already working with a doctor, therapist, nutritionist, Ayurvedic practitioner or another provider, HTMA can often be used as an additional piece of information rather than replacing that work.
Sometimes the most supportive thing isn't doing more—it's understanding what your body is actually asking for first.
-
Yes, this is for the mamas. Collecting an HTMA sample is completely non-invasive—it simply requires a small amount of hair.
Pregnancy is also an incredibly nutrient-demanding season, making nourishment + mineral status especially important for both you and your baby. HTMA can offer another lens into your mineral patterns during this time and help us think more intentionally about supporting your changing nutritional needs.
Any recommendations during pregnancy are approached conservatively and should complement—not replace—your prenatal care.
-
I especially love HTMA as a tool during the postpartum season, when the body has just moved through the enormous nutritional demands of pregnancy and birth.
It can give us insight into your current mineral patterns and help us build an individualized nourishment plan to support replenishment, energy and overall resilience.
Whether you're simply wanting to rebuild after birth or thinking ahead toward another pregnancy, postpartum is a beautiful time to turn some of that nourishment back toward yourself.

A small amount! 125mg total (about a tablespoon), taken in small sections to keep the sampling unnoticeable.

Within the Mineral-Nutritional Balancing approach I practice, we aren't interested in aggressively forcing the body to detox. Instead, we begin by giving the body the minerals + nourishment it needs to support its own normal metabolic and elimination processes.
One concept discussed within this framework is ionic mimicry—the ability of certain toxic metals to mimic or interfere with essential minerals in the body. For example, lead can behave similarly to calcium in certain biological processes, particularly when essential minerals are insufficient. By restoring bioavailable minerals like calcium, we support the body’s natural ability to release the lead as it is no longer needed. Pretty stunning what can happen when we nourish the body first.
This is why I look at toxic metals within the entire mineral pattern, rather than seeing a number on a chart and immediately jumping into an aggressive detox.
As mineral patterns change, we may also see changes in toxic-metal readings on subsequent HTMAs. When this happens, we look at the whole picture—your mineral patterns, symptoms, history + potential exposures—to understand what may be occurring.
My philosophy is simple: nourish first, rather than force.
-
HTMA does not diagnose or treat parasites, autoimmune disease or gastrointestinal conditions. What it can do is give us another lens into the nutritional and mineral terrain of the body.
Rather than immediately chasing symptoms with increasingly complicated protocols, I like to ask a foundational question first:
Does your body have the nutritional building blocks it needs to function well?
Mineral balancing can then be used alongside appropriate medical testing and treatment when needed. My goal is always to support the terrain of the body rather than simply chase one symptom after another.
-
I think of HTMA as an investment in understanding your body before spending more money guessing.
Supplements, detoxes, specialty diets and wellness protocols can become incredibly expensive—especially when we're choosing them without knowing whether they're actually appropriate for our individual physiology.
HTMA gives us information we can use to make your nourishment and supplementation more intentional and individualized.
For me, that's where so much of its value lies:
Less guessing and more listening to the body.
